Newfoundlands - History
I was born and brought up with animals.
Our first dogs were mongrels but from an early age I dreamed of having a brace of Bullmastiffs and Rhodesian Ridgebacks.
Sat on my first pony at the age of four and finally had my own pony at Nine years. We competed successfully with the horses at County level winning at Gymkhanas, show jumping and working hunter classes.
Realised my dream of owning a Bullmastiff at the age of 19, did everything wrong buying from a ‘backyard breeder’. Luckily he had the most fantastic temperament. I decided to show him, he was a very well constructed dog with good movement, but lacked breed type – essential in this breed, at a show one day I saw the Newfoundlands, and had to have one.
My first Newfoundland arrived some fifteen years ago and was very successful as a puppy, winning many BPs and a BPIS. She was a quality bitch with a very good pedigree but not CC quality. She failed her health checks and was never bred.
My second Newf was a daughter of Ch Pouch Cove Repeat After Me At Karazan, from his first UK litter. She won her first CC as a two year old, quickly followed by her second – sadly for a number of reasons she did not finish. She passed her health checks with flying coulours and had two litters.
I realised I needed to find more bloodlines containing ‘Pouch Cove’ and looked to Europe. Einar Paulsen of Cannon Bear Newfoundlands had a young male Nor Swed Dan Ch Pouch Cove’s Windwagon Whaler and I booked a puppy. She became Ch Cannon Bear’s Obsession for Topsail, top black bitch 1998.
Einar then had USA Ch Pouch Cove’s Goodfellow on loan, two puppies found their way to England. Cannon Bears Quenemo and Ch Cannon Bears Reason To Kill. Rhea set the show world alight and is proving to be a super brood.
I hope to continue to breed quality Newfoundlands who embody the spirit of the breed, with true temperaments, good health and with lots of breed type.
